For its first 2010 production the Hyde Park Community Players present two very different plays united by a common theme of “Mistaken Identity.”
On Baile’s Strand is poet William Butler Yeats’ first dramatic treatment of the legendary Irish hero Cuchulain. Oath-bound to High King Conchubar, challenged by a young enemy who is—unknown to either of them—his own son, Cuchulain is fatally torn between the instinctive love he feels for the young stranger and the obedience he owes to his king.
With costumes to delight the eye, music to entrance the ear, and swordfighting to stir the blood, On Baile’s Strand is a feast for the senses, as well as for the heart and mind,
After the intermission, we present The Flying Doctor, by Molière: Confusion and trickery abound in this “slamming windows” farce. Desperate to marry his young love, our hero dresses up his valet Sganarelle as a doctor and sends him off to bamboozle the heroine’s father. Playing doctor is easy enough. But playing a doctor and his identical twin brother—in the same place and at the same time? That’s a prescription for some serious comedy.
