The Hyde Park Alliance for Arts and Culture (HyPa) is dedicated to building a rich and vibrant cultural destination on Chicago’s South Side by supporting the arts and encouraging audience development.
Who We Are
HyPa, the Hyde Park Alliance for Arts and Culture, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting Chicago’s mid-South Side as one of Chicago’s premier cultural destinations.
Founded in 2009, HyPa is a powerful voice for arts and cultural organizations in the greater Hyde Park community. HyPa's work strengthens audience development efforts of our members, facilitates valuable connections, and showcases
Hyde Park’s dynamic arts and culture scene through a variety of
events and programs, including the annual
Hyde Park Jazz Festival.
HyPa members come from across Chicago’s mid-South Side and include some of the finest art, theater, music, dance, architecture, and cultural organizations in the nation. Members also are individuals, artists, and businesses from the Hyde Park community and beyond.
Member benefits include listings in HyPa’s membership directory and website, promotional and networking opportunities, participation in special events and programming, and access to HyPa’s outreach and marketing activities.

Board of Directors
Mary Krinock, President
Mary Krinock is Director of Strategic Initiatives at the Museum of Science and Industry, and will serve as HyPa's Board President for 2011. She will also continue to Chair the Governance and Nominating Committee. She is responsible for the oversight and planning of the Museum's seven volunteer advisory committees, President's Council, strategic planning, community outreach, as well as special Museum initiatives.
Prior to joining the Museum, Mary served in the field of government and community relations. She served as Assistant Director of External Programs and Director of Government and Community Relations for the College of Osteopathic Medicine at Michigan State University. Before joining MSU, Mary was Legislative Coordinator and Account Executive for the Michigan Association of Counties. Representing Michigan's 83 county governments, she was responsible for legislative advocacy on judiciary issues and the development of membership services and programs. A native of Michigan, Mary received her M.A. in Art Administration from New York University and a B.A. in Psychology from Michigan State University.
Monica Haslip, Vice President
Monica Haslip is Founder & Executive Director of Chicago-based Little Black Pearl Workshop (LBP), an innovative inner-city non-profit organization. The primary vision is to create an avenue for exposure to art and culture while teaching the profitable connection between art and business. Prior to Little Black Pearl, Ms. Haslip was the Senior Marketing Manager for the Midwest at Black Entertainment Television, and the photography department at Johnson Publishing Company.
Monica has received recognition as one of the six 2004 Chicagoans of the Year by Chicago Magazine (January 2005 issue), and the Chicago Defender honored her as one of 50 Women of Excellence. Most recently, she was honored as one of 30 Community Hero's by LISC Chicago's New Communities Program. She contributes her time to boards and committees representing various important causes such as Board of Directors for the Greater Chicago Food Depository, where she serves on the Missions and Programs Committee. In addition, Monica currently serves as Vice President of the Board of Directors for HyPa (Hyde Park Alliance for Arts and Culture).
MIchelle Olson, Treasurer
Michelle Olson is Assistant Vice President for Civic Partnerships, Office of Civic Engagement; University of Chicago and currently leads its arts and culture initiatives. Michelle is treasurer of HyPa and Co-Chair of the Marketing Committee. In addition to serving as HyPa's Treasurer Michelle serves as a board member and volunteer for the Illinois Network of Charter Schools, Hyde Park School of Dance, and the Hyde Park Chamber of Commerce. She has a solid history identifying resources and creating partnerships between private and public sectors, citizens, non−governmental organizations and government officials and between the academic world and the community.
A Chicago native, Michelle recently received her MBA from the University of Chicago's Booth School of Business. She also has a Master's from the University of Chicago's Social Service Administration, and a BA from Lake Forest College.
Theaster Gates
Theaster Gates, Director of Arts Programming, University of Chicago directs the University of Chicago's growing arts programming initiatives. Theaster is also a practicing artist whose performance based work examines spaces, relationships, traditions and perceptions. Gates' work is funded by the Joyce Foundation, the Graham Foundation, and the African American Art Alliance. In 2010 alone, he has performed and exhibited at the Whitney Biennial and the Armory Show in New York, the Milwaukee Art Museum, Brunno David Gallery and Pulitzer Museum of Art in St. Louis, and the Contemporary Arts Museum in Houston. He also completed residencies with the John Michael Kohler Arts Center, Sheboygan, WI; Museum of Contemporary Craft, Portland, OR; and Artadia, New York. He is a 2010-11 Loeb Fellow at Harvard's Graduate School of Design.
Jill Ingrassia Zingales
Jill Ingrassia Zingales served as a senior executive at Crate & Barrel for many years. Prior to that Jill held senior marketing and design positions for several private sector businesses including Sears. Jill has recently moved to Hyde Park from Evanston with her two daughters to join her husband and his two children. Jill enjoys the arts and cultural resources of Hyde Park. She recently designed and led HyPa's Culture Coast workshop and is enthused about HyPa's mission.
Marilyn Jackson
Marilyn Jackson is Vice President for Marketing and Sales at the Chicago Architecture Foundation, which serves over 500,000 people each year and operates more than 7,000 architecture tours for over 200,000 guests. Responsible for marketing strategy, public relations, and group sales, Marilyn positions the CAF as one of Chicago's top cultural organizations and the city's preeminent tour operator, and guides its brand. Marilyn's career blends more than 20 years of marketing and strategic planning experience in both nonprofit and corporate environments, including management posts at the Museum of Science and Industry, Six Flags Theme Parks and Ameritech Corporation.
Marilyn holds an MBA from Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management and a BS in Biology and Sociology from Cornell University. Born in Jamaica and raised in Brooklyn, she has called Chicago her home for 18 years. She lives in South Shore with her husband, three children, and a peculiar cat named Snickers.
Sheryl Papier
Sheryl Papier has been involved with HyPa since its inception and served as HyPa's founding President. She is a seasoned strategic marketing and communications professional with 19 years' experience creating positive public image, increasing brand awareness, and leveraging external relations and promotional strategy to advance organizations. Most recently she served as Vice President of Marketing and Communications for the Frank Lloyd Wright Preservation Trust.
Melissa Weber
Melissa Weber, a community resident and artist, creates abstract compositions and materialized drawings from porcelain, every day materials and found objects. Weber served as the lead artist and played an instrumental role in the recent storefront installations called Art Here Art Now on 53rd Street. Originally trained in Interior Design, Weber began working in ceramics in 1992. Her functional vessels have been exhibited at galleries and retail venues in Chicago including the 57th Street Art Fair. Her work was recently on view at Next/Art Chicago and the Graduate Exhibition at the Sullivan Galleries of the School of the Art Institute. Weber is the mother of two sets of twins, and sits on the Board of Directors of the Hyde Park Art Center and the Hyde Park Alliance for Arts and Culture. Melissa has a BA from Duke University, an AAS degree from Parsons School of Design, and an MFA in Studio Art in 2010 from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
